Woogie Nights LA w/ John Tejada, J. Phlip & idiot Savant!

Teaming up with our brothers and sisters at The Do LaB once again, we bring you the December installment of Woogie Nights LA, marking the very last Woogie event of 2011!  This month we're honored to have John Tejada, J. Phlip and idiot Savant gracing our stage.  For those of you that were at the Woogie Stage at Lightning in a Bottle 2010, you may remember that amazing set that John threw down for us.  We certainly do, and we're incredibly excited to have him back to hear what he's been up to.

J. Phlip is an artist we've been hearing about and listening to for some time now (like everyone else it seems), and the music coming out of dirybird records lately has done nothing but increase our desire to hear her first hand.  Well, we could wait no longer, it was time to get that girl back to the states and onto our stage.

idiot Savant delivered one of the most memorable performances of the year on the Woogie Stage at LIB 2011 and are clearly poised to make an indelible mark on the world of electronic music.  Handed a packed dance floor by Lee Burridge, this DJ duo had people literally hanging off the Woogie Stage during their set that made Sunday night at Lightning in a Bottle one of the best in history.

All in all, we're super excited to have the opportunity to share this kind of line up with you all . . . it's a true Woogie line up through and through!  Hope to see you there!!!

And now, a little about our amazing artists for this month . . .

Normally associated with his peers in techno from Detroit, Europe and elsewhere, John Tejada has embraced electronic music as a personal frontier, expanding on his resume as a techno recording artist as producer, remixer, DJ, and label owner. Known for crafting a brand of subtle, musical techno, his recorded output ranges across tempo and genre lines, from chilled out affairs with spacious arrangements to pulsating, densely layered, deeply energetic tracks that work magnificently in the hands of DJs as well as on the home stereo.

John Tejada was born in Vienna, Austria on April 21, 1974. His parents, both professional classical musicians (his mother an opera singer and father a conductor) began his early piano training at the age of 4. In the summer of 1982, John would move with his mother to her place of birth, Los Angeles. It was that summer at the age of 8 another instrument would catch his eye, the drums. Teaching himself to play along to classic rock music, John quickly learned his way around the drum set (an instrument he still plays to this day in his I’m Not A Gun project). Everything changed however when he got his first taste of early 80’s hip hop music. The impact of those early productions and electronic experimentation was very strong. Soon after, at the age of 12 John was given his first set of turntables and a mixer. He wanted to figure out everything he was hearing DJs do at that time. His first gigs came at the age of 12 for his own school, DJing his school dances.

J Phlip (pronounced J Flip), known to some as Jessica Phillippe, discovered house music in her hometown of Champaign, Illinois, just 2 hours south of Chicago. Sometime around her 19th birthday she got her first DJ rig - two belt drive turntables and a mixer lacking EQ knobs for $100 bucks! From then on, her poor roomates were forced to listen to a constant dance party in-between her Systems Engineering studies. There aren't a lot of 4.0 braniac engineering majors who decide to become DJs instead of cashing in on their degrees, but Jessica truly loves the music and has dedicated her life to it.

Her proximity to Chicago’s famous house scene tremendously affected her sound, but the distance afforded her the freedom to incorporate a variety of other influences into her repertoire. Her sets posses a fun "lets-not-forget-this-is-dance-music" feeling and simultaneously keep you guessing about what might come next. Her collection spans house, tech house, deep house, techno, booty bass and pretty much anything that makes you shake your ass.

She’s currently a well known DJ/Producer in San Francisco and Berlin, where she has lived since mid 2010.  Her skills on the decks, and in the studio, have secured her a highly desirable spot as an official member of the dirtybird crew. She has a residency at San Francisco’s infamous Endup nightclub, which is notorious for its non-stop, never-ending parties.

Jessica continues to have new productions coming out on dirtybird where she has signed on as an exclusive original artist. She is currently Claude VonStroke's favorite support DJ and has already played at amazing high profile gigs like Fabric, Space Ibiza & Back to Basics. She was also chosen for URB Magazine's Next 100 of 2009.  With an arsenal of new original tracks, Jessica is super excited to kick off her new tour at Woogie Nights LA!

idiot Savant

Much like the layer of congealed fat settling on the top of Momʼs Gefilte Fish, Ron Levy and Jesse Wright formed a deliciously disgusting DJ duo known as idiot Savant. The duo supported the founding of Pocket Underground in 2004 as an outlet for the Matzoh balls that were rattling around in their chicken broth. Ron has been playing and making music since he was knee-high to a duck and Jesse just does it for the free drink tickets. Both feel equally at home with their alkaline goggles on as they do their Burberry Banana Hammocks.  Their music can best be described as organic, psychedelic, sexy and completely Kosher...Glatt Kosher...
